| Zurna
was recorded live in Tel-Aviv on 1992, right when the new ethnic wave was
pulsing its way to Israel. This is a sophisticated album in which the ingredients
may metaphorically resemble a reach and spicy meal. While listening to the ensemble's music, one may imagine being served with lots of mixed dishes and thus being allowed to have a bite of rather different musical trends. Classical instruments are playing alongside oriental Arab and Turkish ones. The sound of Yuval Mesner's cello joins the hypnotizing sound of Yakov Miron's Zurna, the ancient Asian oboe that gave this album its name. This one-hour journey, guided by the sound of the Zurna, is genuinely looking for a peaceful musical collaboration between the ancient sons of Abraham, Israeli Jews and Muslims. |
